Research Director - Theory Based Evaluation

Leading social research agency seeks a new Research Director to help with continued growth. This will be a fast-paced, high profile position, leading on the development of new business and funding opportunities and supporting the growth and diversification of our clients theory-based and wider evaluation portfolio. The successful candidate will design and deliver high quality evaluations using mainly, though not exclusively, Theory-Based Evaluation designs. You will need to build relationships with key clients and partners, raising the profile of our clients position as leaders in high quality theory-based evaluation work. You will work on research projects across policy areas, managing the work of evaluation team members and collaborating closely with other teams in the Policy Research Centre on the delivery of mixed-methods evaluations. The successful candidate will be expected to continue developing their theory based and wider evaluation expertise through formal and informal learning and develop the skills of junior colleagues

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Designing high quality Theory Based Evaluations of complex and systems-level interventions
  • Leading on proposals for evaluation projects and winning new business, making a significant contribution to meeting Evaluation Team’s financial targets
  • Leading delivery of complex evaluations, working closely with colleagues across Policy Research
  • Managing multiple projects to ensure delivery is on time, in budget and delivered to the highest standards
  • Handling client relationships, and brokering collaborations with partner organisations
  • Contributing to the development and mentoring of junior staff and providing quality assurance for their work
  • Contributing to teaching research methods internally and/or externally including delivering training in Theory-Based Evaluation and other Evaluation methodologies
  • Engaging in impact activities to promote work externally.
  • Undertaking continuing personal development to enhance research skills, keeping up-to-date with recent developments in evaluation methodologies
  • Maintaining and promoting high ethical and information security standards.

Requirements

  • Experience of using theory of change and/or logic models as part of an evaluation
  • Experience of Theory-Based Evaluation design and implementation, with expertise in at least one, and ideally multiple approaches such as Contribution Analysis, Realist Evaluation, Process Tracing or Qualitative Comparative Analysis
  • Experience of designing and delivering mixed-methods evaluations
  • Experience of bidding for research contracts and grants, and a track record of securing funding for high quality work
  • Experience of managing clients and stakeholders, working at a senior level
  • Ability to communicate clearly, in different styles and for different audiences (including reporting)
  • Experience of leading and managing teams and developing the skills of junior colleagues
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to manage project budgets
  • Ability to work flexibly and proactively on multiple concurrent research projects

Desirable

  • Familiarity with a wider range of evaluation methods including randomised control trials, quasi experimental impact evaluation designs, systematic review and/or value for money analysis
  • Interest in, and familiarity with administrative and large survey datasets in fields such as health and well-being, education, employment, crime and justice and beyond
  • Experience of conducting analysis using statistical software packages such as STATA or R
